Recently, on national TV, there was a clip of a flying fish that set a record for the longest flight. This fish thought it was a bird and spent 45 seconds or so hovering over the wave tops. Dusty Payne knows how that flying fish felt because he is establishing himself as a surfer who is more comfortable in the air than in the water. Born in Wahiawa on Oahu, Dusty’s family moved to Maui when he was five and he has grown up nurtured by all the waves that island has to offer: from windy slop at Hookipa to 60 foot Jaws and everything in between. Dusty’s favorite wave is Honolua Bay and it is in those long, powerful rights – one of the best high performance hotdog waves in the world – where Payne developed his high-flying style.
