MONSTER ENERGY REPRESENTED WELL AT END OF SEASON AFP AWARDS

The Association of Freeskiing Profesisonals, or AFP, is freeski park and pipe`s largest organizing body, makes a cohesive tour out of a myriad of freeskiing events from around the globe. Annually, the AFP salutes the top three freeskiers in each category—slopestyle, superpipe, big air and overall—at its end of season banquet, held in Whistler, BC, Canada. And even while dealing with a rash of injuries to its athlete roster, Monster Energy`s athlete presence was felt through the ranks, with a top three finisher in each men`s category.
Former AFP World Overall Champion Jossi Wells finished second overall, bolstered by strong early season big air performances and a silver medal performance at Winter X Games Tignes. This marks the third time the Kiwi has been on the overall podium, finishing third in the 2011-12 season and first in the 09-10 season. "It`s definitely cool to be recognized by the AFP for competing in all the events, all year," said Wells. "It can be tough to try keep up with the rest of the guys who are only focusing on one event, but I`ve always enjoyed riding slope, pipe and big air, so I`ll keep giving it my best shot! Huge props to Gus for killing it all year & winning the overall!" Following Wells in third place overall was Sweden`s Henrik Harlaut. Harlaut made waves this winter by dominating Winter X Games Aspen Big Air with his triple cork 1620, and following up with a silver medal in slopestyle the next day. 16-year-old Aaron Blunck of Monster Energy finished narrowly back in fourth, an impressive showing for the youngster.
Where Henrik fell short in the overall category, he didn`t in the Big Air department. The cult-followed Harlaut didn`t miss a podium this season, starting in the fall in London. Continuing through to Aspen where he won gold, ultimately ending the season in Whistler with a third, collecting five podiums when the dust settled. “I feel awesome,” said Henrik. “The title just shows that I was able to stay consistent. I was just having fun along the way… I tried not to worry too much about the competition and I ended up doing very well.” The 2011 Winter X Games Big Air gold medalist Alex Schlopy finished just outside the top three, as well.
The AFP Superpipe race went back and forth all season long between Monster`s David Wise and Torin Yater-Wallace, each winning an X Games stop this season. David, who joined Monster in March, was on the podium for five of the seven contests he entered this season, finishing no worse than fifth place. Ultimately, David`s silver medal at Winter X Games Tignes—the final pipe event of the year—put the nail in the coffin, crowning Wise over Yater-Wallace by a mere 84 points. Absent from the Awards banquet, David sent in a video message to the audience. “I would say that this was the most competitive year ever for pipe,” commented David. “We’ve truly pushed the sport to a whole new level, not only in technicality, but also in style and creativity. It`s an honor to be a part of a sport that is growing and progressing in such a cool way, and to be crowned the AFP Champ on top of all that? Well, it just doesn’t get any better.”
Men`s Slopestyle was a dogfight from the beginning, with Monster Energy`s James Woods leading most of the season, trailed by eventual AFP winner Nick Goepper. Woods ultimately ended up third, finishing behind Russell Henshaw, who finished strongly despite missing a month in the middle of the season due to injury. Last season`s AFP Slopestyle winner Tom Wallisch finished a respectable fifth in the season ending rankings.
With two-thirds of Monster`s women`s team on the mend, Keri Herman held it down for the ladies, taking third place in the Overall Title race. Herman`s results were bolstered by two slopestyle wins at two World Cup slopestyle events and a smattering of top 20 pipe results. Congratulations to Herman, who take her third straight top-three Overall finish.
