Monster Energy’s Nyjah Huston continued his impressive 2013 run by taking the win at the Street League Skateboarding (SLS) in Kansas City, Stop 3 of the 2013 SLS World Tour. Chris Cole backed him up with a 2nd place finish, meaning a 1-2 finish on the podium for the Monster Energy team. Continuing the impressive showings in KC, their teammate Shane O’Neill won the DiamondLife Afterparty Best Trick contest.

Huston’s been nothing short of dominate in competition lately. A mainstay at SLS since its beginning in 2010, he’s the reigning 2012 SLS Champion and has kicked off 2013 by winning all three SLS events so far (Foz de Iguacu, Barcelona and now Kansas City). The most dominant competitive skater ever, he has earned more prize money than any skateboarder in history.

The finals at SLS Kansas City saw the top 10 skateboarders who progressed through the prelims hitting real street obstacles, built especially for today’s event. A combination of scores from three sections—Flow, Control, and Impact—are summed to determine the final results.

Given his contest successes this year, Huston was considered the man to beat heading into Kansas City. But the other finalists were gunning with huge tricks (and scores) to show for it—the final was full of scores in the 9-plus range, which made for loads of excitement. Huston first delivered in the Flow section. Kicking off with a fast gap to back lip, he followed with a kick flip over the bump, a nollie crook on the A-frame, a kickflip front blunt to fakie, 360 flip, backside tail, and a kick flip front board. The 8.9 meant the early lead.

As the event rolled to the Control section Huston nailed a nollie heel frontside noseslide for a 9.0. Finally he stepped up in the Impact section with a bevy of huge tricks on the big rail: a kickflip front board on the kink (9.1), a kickflip back lip (9.5), gap to nosegrind (8.1), and a nollie crooked grind (8.9). The high scores meant the win even before his last try, but a gap to back nosebluntslide meant a 9.8, the highest score of the season.

Impressed by the competition today, Huston said afterwards, “Everyone’s tricks were so insane. For everyone to be able to do those tricks in one of two tries shows that skateboarding has gone to another level.”

Cole looked solid all day as well, unveiling some tricks he’s been working on and marking perhaps his best skating of the year thus far. In the Flow section, the always-methodical Cole made a back smith, a kickflip over the rail on planter, a front blunt on the flat ledge, and a switch 360 flip for a 7.9. In the Control section, a Cab front board on the down rail meant a 7.5, and a kickflip front blunt backside flip to fakie (for a 9.1) gave him 2nd place. Finally, on the Impact section, Cole nailed a front blunt on the hubba (7.5), an ollie over to blunt (7.5), a really gnarly Halfcab noseslide to back tailslide (8.8), and a gap to front nosebluntslide (9.0).

Thrilled with his performance in KC, Cole said, “I did everything I wanted to do and more out there, and I feel like a winner! But goddamn, Nyjah ripped.”

At the conclusion of the finals, The Diamondlife Afterparty Best Trick contest went down, with Shane O’Neill taking the win thanks to a nollie flip krook nollie flip on the big hubba,
