Surf Sergeant Alexa Muss is AOTW!

Author: Robby Burleson

Alexa Muss is a 14 year old surfer from Sandy Hook, NJ. She has an amazing outlook on life and has already traveled around the world. She may be young, but she is more mature than most middle aged women. She recently took 3rd place this past weekend at Virginia Beach in the Jr womans's shortboard. She has a very bright future ahead of her and we are stoked to have her on the team!

Alexa you recently came out to California and got to visit the Monster HQ. How did you like the office and what was your favorite part of the building?

The Monster HQ was probably one of the greatest parts of my trip!!! The office was full of super cool team riders and employees who were so friendly! My favorite part of the building was for sure the athlete lounge and the helmet wall ! It was a fun experience to be able to visit HQ and meet people, see the setup and be welcomed by everyone at Monster.

What part of New Jersey are you from and how does it differ from California?

I'm from Northern most part of the New Jersey Shore which is up near Sandy Hook. I live in a pretty low key town and even though I live less than 1/2 mile from the beach, there are not alot of surfers. I have alot of different breaks to surf here in New Jersey but have to drive quite a ways for some of the better ones (besides my secret spot close to home!) So...... being in California was amazing, it was full with surfers of all ages and being able to surf with some of the best, really was cool. I was stoked to have the opportunity to surf Trestles every day and have an option to go to so many great spots so close which is much different than at home. Everyone was super friendly in San Clemente and I had a great time meeting some really cool people in Southern California and it was really special because I learned to surf on a family trip here when I was three, so it was great to return!

Where were you surfing while on your trip to CA and what is your favorite spot?

On my trip to California I was mostly surfing at Lowers, but I also surfed State Beach, Huntington, Uppers, Cottons, T-street, and Newport. My favorite spot was either Huntington or Lowers and having so many great breaks so close was just awesome!

At such a young age you have traveled to so many places already. What has been the best trip so far and what experiences did you gain from it?

Luckily I have been able to surf in alot of different countries and places ! The best trip I've ever been on is probably either Europe or Costa Rica. Costa Rica was really special because I gained a lot of friends and made friendships that I think will last a lifetime. I can honestly say that I consider myself lucky to have friends all over our country and now the world. My coach runs a training program in Costa Rica and the waves in Nosara were so consistent that I feel like I got alot out of it. I also had a great time on a good will project there planting trees in the Rain Forest, so it was an amazing few months which I am definitely looking forward to doing again.

You have had a pretty solid year of competitions. What was your most successful event and what do you have in store for the future?

My most successful event this year was probably gaining the Regional Title. I was also super stoked to Make Quarterfinals at Nationals, make the 4th round at Volcom VQS Worlds and took 3rd at ECSC Vans Event in Virginia Beach. I am really looking forward to stepping it up in the future and I am going to strive to get a spot on the Junior World Tour. I feel its all about progression and I'VE GOT A PLAN :)

Who would you like to thank?

I'd mostly like to thank my Mom and Dad as well as my brother, AJ, they support me no matter what I do and I am really thankful for my family. I also feel super lucky to have some great friends, mentors and people in my life and since I travel alot, I thank all of them for letting me go in and out of their lives and always making me feel like time never passed. I don't take any of that for granted.

Super thankful for my coach, Alex Espir and all my sponsors like RVCA, Xcel, Smith, Lets Party Traction my local surf shop Billabong New Jersey, and Js Surfboards . BIG HUGE thank to everyone from Monster, you really have made me feel like a part of the Monster Family!!!
