Monster Army Captain Spencer Whiting is this week's AOTW. Spencer is from San Diego, CA and currently resides in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Spencer has dreams of competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Korea. This is what Spencer had to say:
Who influences
you/why?
My friends I ride with
in Mammoth influence me to continue to progress and keep me wanting to learn
new things everyday while still keeping style in everything I do. There's no
point in doing a trick and missing out on style. I think Sage Kotsenburg has
had a lot of influence on my riding in the last few years by keeping with what
he wants to do instead of falling into the triple cork spin to win.
Who/what inspired me
to snowboard?
When I was younger my
Mom and Dad would always take me up to Stratton, Vermont. I got hooked
instantly and would always watch videos of Scotty Lago, Travis Rice, and Mason
Aguirre when I was younger and wanted to try to learn everything they were
doing.
What are your proudest
moments/accomplishments of 2013/2014?
There's been too many
awesome moments this season. But I was pretty stoked on getting to ride powder
after the European Open in Laax. That mountain is insane and the feeling you
have after every run and looking around at the scenery is insane.
Have you had to
overcome any challenges that have made snowboarding an obstacle at times?
Last February I ended
up breaking my ankle going to big on a jump. It was a long road of recovery and
I worked really hard all last spring to make sure my ankle was ready for this
season. I ended up spending a lot of time in Hood and Whistler last summer
getting back into everything.
What is your daily
routine and how do you prepare yourself for a day of snowboarding?
I usually wake up
pretty early and make myself some eggs in the morning and then head up to the
mountain around 8 o'clock. I usually stretch and do a little morning workout up
at the Mammoth Snowboard Team gym in the morning to get myself warmed up and
then head out and ride all day.
Where would you like
to see yourself in the next few years?
I want to keep having
fun with snowboarding and hopefully get into X Games next season. My main goal
is to keep learning new tricks and doing different grabs. If all goes as
planned I want to try to qualify for the 2018 Olympics in Korea.
Who would you like to
thank?
I wouldn't be where
I'm at without my Mom or my sponsors. So a big shout out to Volcom, Giro,
Mammoth Mountain, Freestyle Watches, and Monster Army for the support and
everyone else who has helped me out one way or another along the way.
