Surf Sergeant Spencer Bridges is Athlete of the Week

Author: Robby Burleson

For this week's Athlete of the Week we have Monster Army Surf Sergeant Spencer Bridges from Summit, NJ. Spencer is an incredible surfer who travels year round to various competitions all around the globe. His most recent accomplishment came from the ESA Northeast Regionals where he took the overall win. We caught up with Spencer recently to see what he currently has going and also his plans for the near future. Check out what he had to say in this week's Monster Army Athlete of the Week!

We noticed that you have been traveling around the world this season. Where have you been and what was your favorite location that you were able to surf?

This winter I was fortunate enough to travel to some amazing places and experience different cultures. I spent the month of February on the North Shore of Oahu training with local Kahea Hart. From Hawaii I went to Australia for the month of March where I spent two weeks each in Torquay and the Gold Coast. In Torquay I trained with Adam Robertson at Surfing Victoria and on the Gold Coast I trained at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre. After two months on the road I came home for a couple weeks to recharge and then headed back out to Ireland with Pro Surfer Rob Kelly! We were able to surf perfect (but cold) waves by ourselves!

Congratulations on winning the ESA Northeast Regionals a few weeks ago. How has your contest season been going and what other event's have you done well in?

Thank you! I've had a pretty good year so far with contests, but so far that was my best result!

Do you have any upcoming events, video parts, or trips planned for the summer?

Rob Kelly and I are editing a video from our trip to Ireland that should be out very soon. I will also be competing in the NSSA Nationals and hopefully the USA Championships in California the summer. I also plan to compete in the Pro Jr. events at Virginia Beach and Belmar.

It looks like you compete in quite a few different disciplines at events? What is your favorite and why?

Yes! I compete in both Shortboard and Longboard! I like being an all around good surfer and I find that longboarding helps my shortboarding and vice versa. However shortboarding is my favorite because I like to preform radical maneuvers.

Where would you like to see yourself in the next 3 years?

I would like to see myself competing on the QS while attending a college in California.

What is your favorite place to surf in the world? What is your dream location to surf?

My favorite wave to surf is D'bah on the Gold Coast of Australia. My dream location to surf is Keramas in Bali.

What can we expect to see from Spencer Bridges in the future?

Hopefully an East Coast Title and I’ll also be putting together a bunch of videos of me traveling to new locations.

Who would you like to thank?

I'd like to thank my parents for supporting my career and Rob Kelly for showing me that if you work as hard as you can that you can accomplish your dreams.
