Off Duty: Bruce Klein

Author: Olivia Reed

Hey Bruce, we wanted to check in with you during this down time and see what you're up to when you're "Off Duty," so...

How’s the big news been treating you, any major changes to your season or 2020 schedule?
This is definitely a crazy time for everyone. After building my program from the ground up, training all winter, and becoming ready for the first race of the season it is very discouraging to be put on hold. The first few races of my season have been postponed, a few cancelations, but I assume the rest of the season will be put on hold as well. It's important that we all look at the bigger picture here, which is the wellbeing of our planet, and work together to do our best in overcoming this issue. Hopefully, we can get back to racing this year but our priorities should be on solving this virus.

What does plan B look like for the next couple of months?
Right now, I'm continuing with my training and spending as much time as I can on my bike. It's been nice having a bit of a breather and enjoying more ride time but we'll see how long that can last haha.

How are you training at home or in an isolated setting?
This isolated setting has definitely shifted things around. All my gyms and facilities are closing so I'll have to get creative with what I have. More traditional workouts have been replaced with more mobility work and yoga in order to keep my training but improve on some areas that have been pushed aside in the past.

When you’re not training what are you doing with the down time?
When I'm not training, I've been picking up on some projects that haven't always had the time they need. Working on motorcycles, building a few things around the house, and some riding just for fun. Having been used to traveling the world for the next 6 months, its definitely odd to be stuck at home for this long.

What’s the go to snack you’ve stocked up on?
Pretty much anything I can cook up, with all this extra time on my hands I've just been eating anything and everything haha! Seems to be less and less food available so my normal diet has been a bit relaxed.

Be honest, what’s in the Netflix que…binging any bad tv or movies?
I've been watching a ton of old race footage to remember the good life haha. I haven't got stuck in any movies or shows yet but I'll just cruise YouTube to keep the mind busy, there's some wack stuff up there.

Any advice for people struggling to stay focused on training right now?
I'd say the best thing to do is keep up with the same mentality you have going in to what would have been your first race of the season. It's easy to break apart and let all your preparation go to waste but a good mental attitude and determination will keep you up when others are falling behind.

What are some other productive things you can work on at home? (cleaning your room, yoga, etc.)
Yoga has been a huge one for me. It is so good for your body and mind, especially in this restless time we're all in.
