Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg Interview from X Games Brazil

Monster Energy’s Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg has achieved nearly legendary status in the world of Freestyle MX. From overcoming obstacles like his dual broken femurs suffered in Speed & Style a few years ago, on National TV, to his many, many X Games medals, he has earned every bit of what he has. At X Games Foz do Iguacu, in Brazil, he pulled down his third-consecutive gold medal in Best Whip. We caught up with him immediately after his winning performance.

Monster Energy: Talk a little bit about Brazil. How do you like it?

Jeremy Stenberg: Brazil is dope, dude. The last time I was in Brazil was in like 2008 and I won X-Fighters here. The fans here are just so hype. I’ve always been the crowd-pleaser guy, obviously, which is why I chose freestyle. So, for me, I love putting on a show for the fans. The fans love it and over here you get respect for that. They let you know they love what you’re doing out here. So, it’s cool. I had fun. I came over with [Josh] Hansen and had a good little trip. We’re both going home with medals. I’m not complaining.

Monster Energy: Well, yeah, you and Edgar Torrenteras basically tied on votes at first, right?

Jeremy Stenberg: Yeah, Torrenteras was killing it and we tied. Then they went and checked the votes again or something and I just beat him. So it was perfect. The whole time I was watching him and Hansen and I was like, “Dude, both of these dudes are killing their whips right now.” It was cool to have my teammates up there because we all ride for Monster. So, it was me, Edgar and him [motions to Josh Hansen standing next to him]. So, I’m pumped, dude. It’s a good weekend for Monster and all of us.

Monster Energy: What are you doing with the rest of your weekend?

Jeremy Stenberg: The rest of the weekend? Actually, I’m going to go back and eat some room service and go to bed because my shuttle picks me up at 3:45 in the morning and we fly out at 6!

Monster Energy: You’re bailing!

Jeremy Stenberg: We’re on the first flight home! I’m getting home, man! I want to go home and see the kids and the wife and just chill and relax.

Monster Energy: The flights are gnarly here. They take like a whole day to get here from California.

Jeremy Stenberg: Dude, a full day! And I can’t wait to get home and just sleep in my own bed. I hate hotel beds. My bed here is like a brick. It’s like rock hard. So if you’ve got a bad back, it’s probably good for you, but I don’t! Other than that, I had a fun weekend. Going to Brazil and not knowing what medal I was going to get... Like, I always go in confident like I’m getting a medal, but I never count on a gold because you never know. So, for here, I was pumped. When I saw the votes come in and we were tied, I was like, “Oh, shit!” And they said, “Voting ends in a minute,” and I’m like, “Damn, me and Edgar are right there.” So, for me to come out with a gold, I’m pumped, dude. It makes my sponsors happy and I love that feeling it gives me inside when you win something.
