Round 3 of the Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series brought riders to Solitude Bike Park in Utah, where Mother Nature became just as much of a competitor as the race course itself. All week long, unpredictable weather kept everyone on edge, with lightning forcing the ski lift to shut down multiple times and severe storms creating delays to both practice and the race schedule. Localized flooding added another challenge, leaving racers wondering when they would finally get a chance to ride. Despite the constant rain showers, the steep mountainside would dry out almost immediately, turning the dirt back into loose dust and making traction nearly impossible to find. Every rider spent the week searching for grip, adjusting tire pressure, and trying to piece together the perfect race run on one of the trickiest tracks of the season.
When finals finally arrived, the weather gave riders just enough of a window to battle it out for podium positions. In the Cat 1 15/16 Women class, Mary Jane Kissinger delivered a confident run to secure second place and another impressive podium finish. Over in the Cat 1 15/16 Men division, Spencer Noonan kept things smooth from top to bottom, earning himself the number two spot after a clean and controlled race run.
The Cat 1 17/18 Men class once again proved why it's one of the most competitive categories in the series. Luke Mallen absolutely charged down the mountain, crossing the finish line with the fastest time to claim the top step of the podium. Behind him, Connor Knipscheer and Brent Shorter were separated by only the smallest margins after two incredibly fast rides. Connor finished just off the podium in fourth, while Brent rounded out the top five with another strong performance in fifth. Every second mattered, and the battle between these riders kept fans glued to the finish line.
The Pro Women's race produced one of the biggest storylines of the weekend. After chasing the top spot for years, Kallie Stewart finally broke through with an incredible victory, putting together the ride she had been working toward for so long. Sara Ligman carried great speed through the difficult conditions to secure third place with a smooth and composed run. Taylor Ostgaard had a few costly mistakes during her descent, but her pace was still quick enough to battle back for a fourth-place finish against a stacked field of elite riders.
The final race of the weekend belonged to the Pro Men, where the fastest riders on the mountain faced a course that was changing by the minute. Gavin Tomlinson rode his way into fifth place with another solid result, while Dante Silva pushed the pace to earn fourth after attacking the steep Utah terrain. But once again, the man to beat was Nate Kitchen. In less-than-ideal conditions, Kitchen delivered a nearly flawless run from start to finish, laying down the fastest time of the weekend and adding another Monster Energy Pro Downhill Series victory to his season. With another win under his belt and momentum fully on his side, Nate heads into next week's USA Cycling National Championships in California looking mentally stronger than ever. If Round 3 proved anything, it's that this championship chase is far from over, and the biggest race of the year is shaping up to be one fans won't want to miss.
