Monster Army

Hey Mazie, tell us how everything has been going?

Everything has been going really well! I was nervous going into this season because I got a late start from shoulder surgery recovery, but I feel really good on the bike after getting a few more days in. The Pro GRT at Mountain Creek was only my second time on the new bike, and I wasn’t super happy with my performance. However, looking back 4th was great considering how little time I’d had riding. After that, I went to the Canada Cup at Tremblant and had an amazing race. I loved the course, it was so much fun - tons of mud and slippery rocks! I ended up taking the win there. Last weekend I was at Thunder Mountain in Massachusetts and had a completely different experience. I felt terrible on the course, and took three big crashes in a row on the day of the race. I felt pretty bruised up but decided to start just to get points for the overall. Somehow, I ended up taking the win there as well. I guess riding conservatively must really pay off on that course. I’m stoked to see how the rest of the season goes, and to get more time on my bike!

What have you been working on lately?

Lately I’ve been working on getting my fitness up, which means trail riding a lot. I was out all winter and couldn’t really exercise or ski due to the surgery for the shoulder injury I sustained last year, so I really needed to build my strength from the ground up this season. Despite everything, I already feel better physically than I did last year.

Where is your favorite place to ride?

I can’t pick one, but my favorite places are Killington Bike Park (because it’s my home mountain and they have great variety,) Mountain Creek Bike Park (because I like their race course and jump trails) and Whiteface mountain (because it’s true old school gnar.)

Who do you like to ride with?

I like to ride with other female racers when I get the chance, but there’s not many in my area. I ride a lot with my XC racer buddy Nick Lando because I have to pedal on both uphills and descents in order to keep up with him! I hate to admit it, but it’s made me feel way better even when I’m downhilling. Other than that, I just show up to the bike park and almost always find someone I know willing to take some laps.

What can we expect next from you?

I’m doing two Eastern States Cup races before heading out to Winter Park for USAC nats. After that, my plan isn’t completely decided yet but I’m trying to do Crankworx Whistler and the Snowshoe World Cup.

Do you get to enjoy Summer and wind down, or is that the busy season?

Summer is definitely way more relaxed for me than any other season, since I’m not skiing and don’t have college. My winters are always crazy - I travel A LOT for skiing and have always simultaneously been trying to keep up with school. I get to focus almost all of my attention on biking this summer too, which is great.

What’s your go-to chill activity?

Biking….and sometimes rock climbing. If I’m really lazy, watching too much Netflix.

Favorite food…

Poutine

Favorite music…

De La Soul, but right now the song I keep playing is Truth Hurts by Lizzo

When you were younger and people asked you what you wanted to be when you grow up, what did you say?

I used to want to be a veterinarian, professional skier, and professional rock climber. Somehow all at once too, which is a pretty lofty goal.

Any last thank you's or shout outs?

Thank you to Pivot Cycles, Tyler at Competitive Edge, Fox, and of course Monster for supporting me this season!
